safety items

Is a whistle or any other piece of equipment mandated while kayaking the brine?

Does anyone use scupper plugs on a fish n dive?

I'll be getting one in the water soon and need suggestions. Thanks

In addition to what is listed above

Even if it isn't dark, bring a light source - it can get dark quick when you're in a bad spot

Know the tides where ever you are going and don't underestimate them

Water and energy bars are always a must

and make sure you can get back into your boat

Cell phone in a waterproof bag.

Cutters that you have TRIED, and they are capable of cutting the biggest hook that you use.

Dry Clothes, in a waterproof bag.

Plenty of fresh water!

i have been looking around for some kind of small boaters safety kit, there really is nothing on the market that has the real essentials for a kayaker. most sets will have a whistle, mirror, flashlight and a tow rope or bilge pump - but thats it. orobably have to buy everything separately

Im trying to put together a kit for myself to include those items plus a spare paddle (cabelas has a portable one that will fit nicely in the storage hatch), compass, first aid kit, some kind of flare/flare gun and anything else i can think of - hope the kayak still floats after that!!!
