Hi . Iam new to the fly  tying thing.

 looky.gif  So i have a few questions.

headscratch.gif      Can you tie a fly on a circle hook ? If so . How effective is it ? Does it swim

funny? What is the hit to miss ratio? What type of hook is better?

                                                                Thank to all .

You can tie flies on circle hooks, just remember since it is a circle hook there is hardly any hook set needed. With these circle hooks just keep the light tight and fight the fish. Two great flies to tie with circle hooks are clousers and deceivers, the circle hook does not affect the action at all.

I do a lot of saltwater tying and use the following hooks - tmc 800s - tmc 811s - gama sc15 - gama sl12s - tmc 600 sp. There are plenty of hooks on the market, but these are some of the better hooks from my view point.

One thing I can tell you is to not skip out on good hooks and to always use a small file to sharpen em up.

Best of luck and please share your creations!

Joe

lg_smile.gifThanks for the information Joe . I have tied buck tails before, now I'll give this a shot .

I have tied a few flies , this is without looking at a pattern. I don't know the names of the flies. I just tie .

I've Never thought to tie on circles, but could see the benefit.  Gamakatsu (my favorite big fish hook brand) has some longer shanked circles that might  be good.  Most of my bigger, salty, large bass, and muskie flies are tied on either the SC17 Tarpon hooks or the longer shanked, stainless wide gape SC15s.  I think the circles are SC16.
