STATE HOUSE – Nine pieces of legislation dealing with gun safety and the state’s firearms laws will be outlined and discussed at a news conference scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9. The news conference will be held in Room 313 of the State House.

The bills, which are a consensus of a working group of Assembly members and state officials that have been meeting since January, will be addressed by Speaker of the House of Representatives Gordon D. Fox, President of the Senate M. Teresa Paiva Weed, Gov. Lincoln Chafee and Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin.

Also expected to attend the news conference are Office of Public Safety (State Police) Superintendent Col. Steven G. O’Donnell; RI Police Chiefs Association President John R. Desmarais (Chief of Cumberland Police Department), and a number of mental health advocates.

The bills, which are being sponsored in both the House and the Senate, will address such matters as background checks, behavioral health and firearms safety, firearms violations and weapons sales.

Two of the bills have already been introduced in the two legislative chambers; the other seven are expected to be introduced following the news conference and during the remainder of this week and are expected to be scheduled for committee hearings when the legislature returns from its April 15-19 recess week.
