What canI do?

.....yesterday in the NYTimes there appeared an interesting article on people who count fish..(Why I count glass eels-Busch)

actually, eels, jellyfish, bald eagles and monarch butterflies....

but the crux of the article focused on the efforts of the NY Department of Conservations to establish a juvenile eel monitoring system...the cruc of the topic is this: when people observe and understand a small portion of a system, it generates interest and respect for the overall system....and the data is needed....

when you learn something about an immediate subject at hand, the larger lesson plan creeps in...that is why I become vexed when we pay a license fee, but see fewer and fewer grass roots environmental programs....

the convergence of the known and the unknown engages our wonder, and as fishermen, and Americans, we must to pursue this topic. Our future, and that of our children, depends upon it.

so my open question to our State agencies: what do you do to educate and involve our citizenry ? What volunteer programs exist, what is planned?
