Looking to Start

5 posts in this topic

Hey guys, I've been reading this forum (as well as others) for a while and I'm just dying to get myself into a kayak. I have 2 big questions: First, I read alot in this forum that your advice to newcomers is to try a bunch of Kayaks out and then pick, how do you go about this? Is there a place in Jersey that will rent you new Kayaks to try, or at least have a place to test them? Also, I drive a fairly small car, is this going to be a problem?

Any help would be great,

Thanks

I drive a geo prizm and it is still too big to put on a yaksmile.gif However, with a thule rack system, the yak fit's wonderfully on top. Be sure to tie not only side to side, but fore and aft.

As for trying....well, show up at a fling, like the one I'm hosting in May, up on the Hudson River, or look for a demo day from one of the dealers. Also heard of a new shop in upper Jersey that'll have a show room and a pond....not quite sure when the opening is yet though. Supposed to be real soon. There are places that rent, nto sure who in your area. We have a Dealer up in the Kingston area, also with a small pond, they'll let you paddle, but not alot of SOT's. S
