OK Malibu II or Scrambler XT

5 posts in this topic

I have the opportunity to purchase either a scrampler xt or a Malibu II SOT kayak. I will be using it mainly for fishing back bays and rivers in New Jersey, with the occasional foray into the surf zone. I'm kind of leaning towards the MII because I will be able to take someone with me if I Want to. Can anyone provide info on which kayak is best for fishing.

I own a Malibu 2 (1 of 4 kayaks I own) and have paddled the XT. I usually refer to the M2 as the "family station wagon". It's very stable and makes a good fishing platform. It will accomidate a passenger (or 2 if they are kids)and is comfortable for the novice paddler, but it's a real sled to paddle. It's awful wide and slow. The XT would be a better choice if you fish solo or plan on trips which require some extended paddling.

I agree with coyote, although I know a very good yakfisherman who uses a Malibu2 on the oceanfront regularly. When that wind picks up, it's gotta be a bear, I just know it! I love my XT's...
