Thames

Hit the Thames today, first time ever. Paddled up the river in Norwich and found shad, though not very thick. Was fly fishing, and brought a light trout rod, so had a lot of fun wrestling with them, and watching them leap. Had some good bumps on a huge shad/bunker fly deep, but whatever it was missed the hook. 2 other boats were not doing much, a few 30" stripers on live-lined shad. It felt like a late summer day. Finally headed out, and bumped into a guy madly getting into his boat, telling me of huge flocks of gulls above Rte. 2A bridge. He gave me directions to a put-in behind the abandoned State mental hospital on Rte. 12 (east side of river). After much adieu, found the place. (stop at tackle shop just south of 2A bridge, east side of 12 for directions) Schoolies everywhere. Caught something like 25 fish in an hour, fat and feisty, biggest about 28". They were hitting on the top, and so I switched from a Tabory snake fly to a small popper, and they really started hammering it. Flat calm, no wind, warm, bass smacking as far as the eye can see...some fun. Only wish a cow or two had shown up. Note: the launch site behind the old mental hospital is well worth finding. You can drive right up to the water, and great fishing up and down river. Only problem. You have to cross a train track, and I, of course left late, and then sat waiting for hundreds of cars to pass as a freighter came through just as I pulled out.

Asabatelli... was that you in the yellow kayak that came around 12:30? .... If so I was the guy in the front of the little aluminum boat by the railroad bridge. We had a real good Morning... caught a bunch of small strippers,2- 28 and 29 and 4 between 34-36" and lost 4 that felt about the same size.

asabatelli, we stopped catching anything( except shad/bait) for about 1/2 hour or so, before you showed up. Our initial plans were to try the area were you saw us. Then head down to the State hospital, but we were doing pretty good where we were so we never left until it was time to head home.

On our way back to the launch we decided to take a quick look at the casino area. We went far enough down so we could see the area from a distance ( the other guy wanted to go home crying.gif )We didn't see any birds working so we left. To bad because I did want to head down there and fish. I have never been skunked in that spot yet! I wonder if the birds were there when we peeked, but I didn't see them from upstream?

All in all, had a good day.

Capt Joe, we caught the bigger fish live-lining, that was fun. They were caught down by the next bridge. The river does have a hole about 1/4 of the way back from upstream bridge. There also is a big snag/branch there, also. The water seems to run 5-12 feet along that stretch
