motorace
got my penn spinfisher ssv 3500 today. seems like a damn solid reel! few questions, is the handle suppose to have this much of a gap? i took off the spool and i'm guessing the seal is messed up, right?? straight out of the box. if it isnt normal, any reason for this to happen? after seeing that, i thought i would remove the side plate to check out the internals. is that engraving a quality control thing? also, noticed that the bail wont open fully towards the handle area. i'm guessing thats bc of where the automatic bail thing is, right? kinda sucks, but i'll deal if its normal. that metal looking thing under the gear...which isnt metal, what is it, another type of grease that has collected there?? i hope to have many years of big catches on this thing. PENN Fishing
Good morning....The slight gap between the handle and the body is normal......The Drag Drive Plate seal does look a bit out of line. It should be re-aligned to cover the plate properly. Should not be a problem to shift it over and to make sure that it covers the drag system fully. The engraving.....I'm not sure about, could be a QA mark.....but I'm not certain. You're correct about the bail wire nudging up against the internal trip mech......And that looks like a little build-up of the grease that was on the internals and joined together once the reel was tested/used. That seems to be completley normal and nothing to worry about. Thanks for the questions and feedback and we'd appreciate a short report after fishing the reel for awhile. Take care and have a good weekend.........Tom
redfin
Tom, Assuming the grease in this reel was factory blue grease, can you explain some of it takes on that grey color after some use? There is a deposit of it at 7 O'clock by the main gear. Just curious. I'm enjoying my 4500 thus far.
PENN Fishing
Good morning again......Just an assumption ( considering I don't work at that plant! ) that the color of the grease may be affected by the material of the gears ( main/crosswind) when everything meshes.I don't think it's anything to be worried about though. Kyle K
Is that a ball bearing on the crosswind block? Thanks, Kyle
PENN Fishing
Is that a ball bearing on the crosswind block? Thanks, Kyle Good afternoon......The description from the parts list is "Oscillation Slider Bushing" Tom
Kyle K
Thanks Tom. A bushing is still better than the crosswind block rubbing directly on the frame. That's a worthwhile upgrade. Kyle

motorace
i guess one cant tell from the pictures, but it seems like the seal has been chewed on that side, thus why is wont seal. it looks chewed on the non sealing side, brand new out of box. i thought it may have had a "factory known" reason like rubbing on the rotor bolt, whatever, etc. i also asked about that "weird grease" only because it is a new reel ; and is it suppose to have that kind of build up during normal testing? seems like A LOT of testing for it to be built up like that. Rcarozzoni
Hello all. Long time reader, first time poster. This thread caught my eye as I recently purchased the same reel (ssv3500) and I have the exact same "issue" with my drag seal. It looks/seems as though the seal is supposed to actually be seated under the retainer. I can get the outer edge of the seal under the retainer but it doesn't seem to want to stay there. I read how to set the seal in another post on SOL - http://www.stripersonline.com/a/penn-spinfisher-v-4500-service-tutorial. I followed the instructions to "properly" seat the drag seal, but as I said, it doesn't stay seated under the retainer. My questions is this: Is the seal actually supposed to be set under the retainer or is it supposed to look like it does in the above photos? Thanks in advance for any assistance/answers anyone can provide.
snooker420
It is supposed to be under the plate. The above photos show the seal improperly seated and doing nothing.
Rcarozzoni
Well shoot... How does one go about getting it to stay under the plate? I've tried removing the plate and reassembling as well as simply loosening the screws then "tucking" the seal back under and retightening the screws. Each of the three attempts I've made resulted in the seal flipping right back out from under the plate. This is a brand new reel as well. I have had it out for one very light day after my first attempt at tucking the seal back in. Is this a design flaw, simply a defect in a few reels or an issue of DFO (dumb freakin operator)? If it isn't me being daft and is going to be a continual issue I may not keep the reel.
PENN Fishing
rcarozzoni, If you check out this thread, it explains in some more detail about the problem you are having. http://www.stripersonline.com/t/866181/spinfisher-v-experiences/105 post #111 tony
Rcarozzoni
Thanks for the quick replies guys. I've got the seal pushed down under the Drag Drive Plate, albeit not held down by much. It is quite finicky. I've got it greased over very well and it seems to be staying there (haven't fished it yet since doing all this). The only real question I have left is; Is the Drag Drive Plate supposed to catch and hold the edge of the seal to hold it in place or does the seal just rest on the inside diameter of the Drag Drive Plate? It is difficult to tell in the photos I have seen in the SOL posts. I'm usually very mechanically inclined but I'm starting to think that either this is "normal" and I'm just being overly cautious (love my Penn reels) or I've lost my touch, LoL. Again, thanks for the quick replies, especially from Penn. It's nice to see there is someone actually doing some customer service these days. It is greatly appreciated and one of the reasons that Penn is all I fish with.
nalo1022
I would also liek some clarification on this issue. As my 4500 is having the same issue. is the drag seal supposed to be under the drive plate or on the inside perimeter? There are no photos of a properly seated seal without grease so its hard to tell. The seal seems to be about 1/16 too short around the edges so if the drag engages the seal pops out from under the plate. They cast like a bunch of bananas in a tropical storm. -bdowning
