Ahh... Newport, R.I. .... you can start with the proper spelling. Other than that snark attack what you'll find in Newport ... should you look closely... is a town with the oldest still standing & functioning structures from the colonial period.

The British occupied Newport during the Revolution ... and only burnt down a couple homes to make a point about their "occupation". Consequently the oldest tavern (still serving) in the country is in Newport ... the White Horse tavern. Colonial homes from the 1690s still standing and open for tours (try the Newport Historical Society and Preservation Society).

In these politically strident times the religious right would be perhaps more tolerant.... if they only knew that their particular brand of faith got its start in Rhode Island and on Aquidneck Island .... after they were thrown out of the Massachusett's Bay Colony by intolerant Puritans. So Newport has the first / oldest standing Synagogue - Touro, one of the oldest & restored Quaker Meeting House, the oldest (I believe) still operating Episcopal Church / Trinity ... the Baptist faith was started in Portsmouth ... for Catholics - St Mary's church is where JFK married Jackie.

Every major architect in the USA since the founding has built something in Newport. For the Titantic Crowd ... see the Mansions on Bellevue Avenue ... there you can see what the Robber Barons did with all that money "earned" during the Great Gatsby Era. Funny how history repeats itself. And speaking of Bellevue ... visit the Tennis Hall of Fame at the Casino.

Beaches are somewhat cold until July ... 2nd Beach is the sandiest and the cleanest beach (better than 1st Beach). When at the beach ... get a Del's Lemonade.

For fishing .... try "out front" .... Sachuest (NPS park) point ... Cliff Walk .... Brenton Park on the Ocean Drive .... Fort Adams.

Mostly .... Newport is a tourist - port town known for Sailing & the JAZZ & FOLK festivals. Get out on the water (get a guide?) and the natural beauty of the place will really sink in. The fishing is best in early June and late August / September.;)

If i was coming into Newport and was gonna spend the day, it would be as follows: Breakfast at the Atlantic Grille in Middletown, then head down the road to walk it off at the cliff walk. Then head down to thames and heave a drink at the Landing, then the Port(H2O), see Drew for an Oyster shooter at the Wharf Pub (deli), the new Lobster bar Then make a reservation on the madeline for the sunet cruise, then to Pour Judgement for lunch and more beers. Take a nap, sleep off the shine. Head to the wharf and take the sunset cruise and have some champagne. Have dinner at Perro Salado and wait for the tide. Grab your gear and some eels and head to the cliff walk. Stick bass untill your arms fall off. Have breakfast at the Atlantic Grille.

I remember my first beer......

I had more than my share of drinks last night, and my girlfriend found out that I turn immature once I get a few drinks in me, as I grabbed her boobs in the middle of the bar and yelled "I CANT WAIT FOR THESE LATER!"

oops.

just a shadow of what once was.
