WHeher
I tried using Mallard Flank coated in softex, what do you think?
M. saxatilis
I think the use of mallard flank for the claws is a nice touch. What type of crab mimic are you going for? Or, what conditions/habitat/substrate do you envision yourself fishing these in? Thanks, Kevin Life is too precious to fish ugly flies.
Fisheye
Thye look good to me but how durable do you think the claws will be?
WHeher
I hope they are pretty durable, I coated the whole feather in softex, but I won't really know till I fish them. Kevin, I am going to b fishing these in some sand flats near where I am in CT, with a lot of lady, blue, and asian and green crabs. I colored a few of the claws blue with a sharpie, and some I dotted the backs with a brown color to mimic the lady crabs. Last year there were so many lady crabs I couldn't even begin to count, and there were a lot of big fish in skinny water rolling on them at low low tide. IanCT
After looking around at some of Striblue's posts on the crab apple, I was inspired to whip one up, here is my take on it: Owner AKI 3/0 hook spirit river eyes tan cross cut rabit Pheasant claws and carapace dry fly hackle legs 3 dumbells to sink like a stone clear cure goo over carapace It's sort of a hybrid of the crab apple and CTaylors pheasant shell crab. WHeher
Damn Ian, you never cease to amaze, been impressed by your tying since the Orvis days. What part of the pheasant are you using? It doesn't look like the tips of any tails. Also, I have no idea how to send a PM so maybe I'll hit you up on fb.

Try tying some crabs with felt for back and legs with a little silicone and magic markers seems to swim awesome and is easy to do..

Shinnecockfly
Nice crab flies, nothing like pursuing stripers on the flats and placing a crab fly in front of them hoping they go for it.
NYsaltyfly
That fly would work real well at that "Birdy" spot......"wink, wink...nod, nod...say no more!"
