A buddy of mine gave me a bunch of redwood that I tried turning a few plugs with today. Very nice to turn but I noticed that after sanding the grain lines are raised. Is this common of redwood?

Yeah it is, the soft part of the wood is much softer than the grain lines are, careful sanding can help some, choosing tighter grained blanks to turn helps the most. I had an old picnic table that I cut up for plugs, the tight grained pieces got turned, the wide grained pieces got burned.

But the tight stuff was very nice to work with and gave good results when done, it made for some pretty lively swimmers.
