Oildale resident suspected of eating cats

An Oildale man is set to appear in court Friday morning after being charged with eating cats, officials said Tuesday.

Jason Louis Wilmert, 35, pleaded not guilty in Kern County Superior Court Feb. 7 to one misdemeanor charge of using animals commonly kept as pets or companions as food, and one misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals, court documents show.

A pretrial hearing in the case is set for Friday at 8:30 a.m., according to the court website.

While Kern County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ray Pruitt said he could not comment on the case, since it had already been sent to the District Attorney's office, he did confirm that the sheriff's department arrested Wilmert and that the department is the investigating agency.

"We investigated the case as animal cruelty," he said.

Supervising Deputy District Attorney Michael Yraceburn said he also couldn't comment on the case, other than to say that "the individual is being prosecuted for using cats as a food source."

Ridiculous. People commonly keep fish as pets, too. I know a kid who had a pet cow. Where does it end?

It is not good to eat carnivores That is why you do not see liger steaks on your grocers meat shelves.

Other than that, as long as they were his cats, I won't be coming to dinner at his house, but he can chow away as far as I am concerned.

I figured if he wasn't Asian, he'd be French. When he was a young Frenchman, my buddys Dad used to trap cats for an old Frenchman. He said he got like fifty cents apiece.:)

If you come from a culture of scarcity, you'll eat stuff that other people wouldn't. I don't think this should be a crime. As long as the killing was humanely done, who cares?

In South America guinea pigs are food too. The French eat horsemeat, and I wouldn't mind trying it. No moral difference whatever between eating a slice of cow, a chicken drumstick, and an adorable kitten (removing the tail makes skinning easier.)

All summer long I enjoyed watching the deer in my field every morning and evening. Sometimes at lunch time they would also come out and join me while I ate. It's sad not seeing them once the deer season started but comforting to know that one sits in the freezer.

There's a lunch truck in Seattle that sells pulled guinea pig sandwiches and Italy consumes the most horse meat per capita in the world. Now I'm hungry.
