Got one real cheap, not the LRS ones, but in phenomenal shape.  Spooled with 80 lb mono.

1) What rod should I put it on?

2) Should I get changed to braid?

3) Is this overkill for anything in Montauk on charter fishing or up to Block Island?

Thanks guys  It's real nice for an older reel-is the LRS really that much a difference?

The main differance between the standard and the LRS is the drag cam, The LRS increases at a more pronounced curve where as the non LRS is more graduale. IMO it is an excellent reel. As for your other questions, it would depend on how you plan on using it. Fighting from a chair or stand-up? Trolling or chucking? And as far as size the 50 is pretty standard down here in NC on charter boats for everything, although it is overkill for most fish that are caught these days.

Hi TP, not too familiar with the drag cam, I read the shimano site and I think I get it but for a beginner probably doesn't matter correct?

Plan on standing up, Trolling, don't think I like the bent butt-rods.  Is it real hard without a bent-butt?

THanks
