Warmwater crappie foods?

5 posts in this topic

Crappies feed on small minnows and crustaceans. They also 'eat' crappie jigs rather well. JMHO C2

They will also feed on any insects, tadpoles, small frogs, worms, and plankton.

There is a small pond about 5 minutes from my home and I go there frequently. I've found that, at least in that pond and at Liberty Reservoir, crappies like 1/16 oz jigs at least as much as live minnows. In the spring and fall, chartreuse twister tails seem to do the trick, but during the cold months, pink grubs work well. I was at the pond yesterday and caught 7 on a grub with a blue head and pink tail. It's a great time of year for crappies in small ponds, just fish as slow as possible (a jig below a very small bobber).

This time of year, this is what I feed the crappie. 1 3/4" FinS Shad on 1/16 oz or a modified trout magnet tail on 1/32 oz, hanging under a bobber. I got 6 in an hour after work today.
