Steelhead / Brown Trout jigs for float fishing

4 posts in this topic

I have been doing some research on fishing with float set ups for steelhead and brown trout in the Great Lakes tribs.

It has been a number of years since I fished the tribs and was wondering if you have any favorite jigs/ brands of jigs/ styles and colors that you are willing to share.

I know that artificial eggs, beads, and small plastics also have their fans.

Any and all help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

It has been 20 years since I fished the tribs so I am pretty much starting over.

Jay... Im no pro, but I will show you the type of jigs that I typically tie and have had a lot of success with on great lakes steelhead.

Very simple... I usually use jigheads that range anywhere from 1/32 to 1/80 oz. I think I got these at bass pro. There are similar heads made with stronger (mustad) hooks that are availible from some retailers, but I have always done well enough with these... You don't really use much drag pressure w/ the light line and leaders so i've never straightened out one of these hooks out on a fish.

I posted a little write up last spring on my blog w/ these pics, and tying instructions... You might be able to google search and find it. Hope this helps. Btw, for some reason, I've found jigs to be particularly effective on the steelhead late winter through spring... they work well in fall, but I believe better in spring for whatever reason. Also I almost always tip my jigs with bait... either shiners, waxworms, or maggots (spikes).

Thanks T.J. !

I really appreciate the info on the jigs and how to tie them.

I really like the blue and black combo and I had some success with brownies on blue and black many years ago.

The black jigs look a lot like stone fly nymphs.

Again Thanks!
