How Does One REMOVE the Ball Bearing From a Mitchell 402??

Came across a Mitchell 402 that is more or less in good shape, but the Pinion Gear is on its last legs, and the Ball Bearing is totally shot and needs to be replaced. I have a schematic which is really nice if you like EXPLODED diagrams, but there is something WRONG and I need to strip this thing down and rebuild. Besides the teeny-tiny screwdrivers, how does one REMOVE the $#@*&  "C" locking clamps on the axle???

Once you have removed the OLD Pinion Gear and the OLD Ball Bearing how does one REPLACE them?!? I suspect the previous owner incorrectly took the reel apart and put in back together out of alignment or with pieces missing. I won't know until I can take this thing apart.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
