Striper Plugs for Christmas Island

Rate this topic

Hi All,

Which of the classic wooden striper plugs work at Christmas Island for giant trevally and any other quarry that you will chasing in the surf and around the reefs. I know poppers are popular. Was wondering what else to bring.

Thanks,

Oki

spooks, little neck poppers, and regular poppers. I saw some made locally and they were epoxy sealed, wired hangers, and then fully sealed with 6Xs hanging. Not sure if you are going to be boat fishing or shore fishing, but get ready to try to stop the freight trains from finding a coral head and wrapping and breaking you off. One of my wishes is to fish Christmas one day. You can also Google GT fishing in Hawaii to get an idea of what lures work, but a lot of GT fishing is done with bait in Hawaii so you might mave to search a bit. Take look at Madguyvers, I think this is his handle, posts on SOL.

I've been there twice, but the last time was about 7 years ago. I had good luck with Polaris-style poppers for Giant and Blue Trevally. Big 3 ouncers that make lots of noise. The biggest problem surf casting was wind and then being able to handle and fight fish and keep them off the coral heads. My biggest fish all broke me off. IMO you want to be able to bear down and really horse fish around as much as possible. If I was going back tomorrow I would have a 200 or 250 VS loaded with #65 braid with a long #60 mono shocker so I could try and keep fish from running around the coral. Have fun -- it's a great place.
