Making some fried clams tonight.  Lightly steamed them open to ease the shucking.  Saw something hanging out the belly of one.  Pulled this sucker out.  Been eating steamers for years and never seen one of these.  Texture was tough and solid, almost like a plastic.

I don't think that's a worm. I've seen the exact same thing (only much larger) when opening Bahamian conch. I'm pretty sure it's actually the penis, or some sort of sex organ. In the Bahamas, the local men look for those, remove them, and eat them, b/c they are supposed to give you 'special powers'.

I never saw them in steamers but have in other clams and all the time in the conchs(whelks) we get up here. I was eating raw clams last week and a few had the same thing in it. Like bob g said, I believe it is the sex organ.

I have seen more than one in the same clam in the bait surf clams they sell down in NJ.

Yup, what SIM said. :th: I forgot, I've seen those in every sea clam I've ever opened.

Hello - That 'worm' you saw is actually the clam's intestines....

I am a biologist and run a seafood and science specimen supply in Maine.

If you dissect out the clams 'bellies' you will see that ever belly has a network of the 'worms' / intestines in them.

Happy Eating!
