WTB my first 5wt rod and reel

18 posts in this topic

Just picked up my first 10wt for salt, but would like a 5wt for some spring trout fishing. Looking for an affordable 5wt rod and reel for a newbie. If anyone has a setup they are looking to unload, please let me know with pics and price. Thanks, Steve

How about a St. Croix Avid 5 weight 4 pc. with a Scientific Anglers 45L disc drag reel made in England. Also included is a neopreme reel pouch, tube and Orvis WF5F Wonderline. The line alone is $79 and I'll also throw in another NIP Orvis Silver label line. All are in new condition. $250 shipped.

I have a Orvis Silver Label 9' 5wt 2 pc. tip flex (fast action). I have the tube & rod sock. I had the Orvis Trident reel seat put on this rod. (installed by local Orvis shop) The reel is an Orvis Battenkill 5|/6 disc drag. The reel comes with Orvis 5wt weight forward floating line. I also have the case for the reel. I am asking $225 shipped for everything.

I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

Thanks. Looking forward to the pics.

I'm Sorry for the delay in getting you the pics.

The rod I bought new from Orvis and the reel came with a Trident rod that I had bought used.

The blank is in great shape. The eyes and ferrules are also in great shape. The cork grip has slight discoloration but it still has a "smooth" feel. The reel seat is maple burl and is almost new.

The reel looks good. There are some scratches around the rim mainly on the back of the reel. The drag is not the best but I have the same SA reel as Murphthesurf posted above and the Battenkill drag is similar.

I'm personally a big fan of Orvis I like the quality of their rods and their customer service is excellent. I really like their fast action trout rods. I have 2 other 5wt orvis rods with the same action as this one. (tip flex) To tell you the truth, all three of them feel the same casting and playing the fish.

If you do decide to buy it, I could give you say 2 weeks to cast it, check it out, or fish it. If you don't like it because of the action or something like that just pay the return shipping and I'll refund you in full. If you don't like it because something is wrong with it and you feel I should have mentioned it before you bought it - I'll give you the full refund and I'll also pay the shipping. (LOL just don't break on purpose to get free shipping) Either way, the gf's cat you have to keep - he's non-refundable. :)
