dena
What all of us should do is change your W-4 form to exempt. Save the money that would normally go to the IRS in an interest bearing account. Mail your check off April 15th. Pocketing any interest accrued. Stop the inflow of cash to the government to show those folks that don't understand who is really in charge. No, I will not voluntarily give any more of the money I earn to the government than what is required. Material abundance without character is the path of destruction. -Thomas JeffersonThere are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true. -Soren Kierkegaard
hamlet
while i doubt they have any way to check, claiming exemptions that are not real for your situation is not legal. However, to be penalized you would have to prove intent to defraud (as opposed to simply making a "mistake" on the paperwork). I don't think the gov't can (yet) read your mind to prove intent. This is all, of course, my own personal opinion and not in any way legal advice. I won't tolerate your intolerance, because I hate hate.
