The OWS people have one valid point. They've been lied to their entire lives being told that if they wanted to rise above the chaff, they needed to spend tens and hundreds of thousands of dollar on college and gradschool/professional degrees... only to find that this doesn't guarantee them happiness.

We've managed to raise a society of massively indebted postmodernist pseudointellectuals who are overqualified to ask "Do you want fries with that?"

How do we, societally, guarantee that the next generation moves more heavily into whitish-blue collar jobs (We need mechanics, nurses, pharmacists, hands-dirty engineers, etc) rather than a nation of college professors and out-of-work lawyers who can't really contribute to 'true' GDP growth? I can't see anything changing until we do.

My answer:

1. Parents not inculcate their children that a 4 year college degree is the only way to go.

2. More schools and parents become aware that roughly only %25 of jobs out there (and this has been static for about 70 years) require a 4 year degree or better.

You want to fix it? Stop having the government subsidize the higher education system.

I don't know whether you know it or not but you cannot get a pharmacy degree, a nursing degree, an engineering degree, a teaching degree by not graduating from a 4 or 5 year program at a college/university.

If you have an advanced degree, your salary or opportunities are greater. Businesses pay more for an MA degree than a BA degree.

Irony.Grandparents came to this country to give a better life to the parents of these kids.In doing so they spoiled them rotten and prevented many of the character building struggles they themselves had to endure.Hence the strength, drive, etc. has been bred out of the bloodline. Ooooops. Cheers Alan

When i said 'engineering' I was using it in a grander sense than the academic one. I was using it to mean those that come up with solutions to practical problems of craftsmanship, design, materials and enact them.

Technicians, plumbers, electricians do this every day. But you ask an electric engineering student what he's hoping to do, and he'll talk to you about designing new computer chips, not figuring out the best way to run the wiring through the house.

Regarding nursing and pharmacy programs, and even engineering, though less so, these are degree programs that differ from "Feminist Literature", "Political Science" or even the hard science degree programs in "biology/chemistry/physics/math" in that they have practical aspects and prepare the students for a career.

Perhaps "Veterinary Technician" would be a worthy addition to the list. It's a 2 year program you go through after completing a GED. "Nuclear Medicine Technician", also, is a 2 year degree, focused on a specific goal.

Make your own mind up. We are still a nation of individuals.

1. everyone isn't special

2 everyone doesn't get a trophy

3. the world needs ditch diggers

That's why there are illegals and these illegals are moving in "big time" to the construction industry and underbidding your roofer, carpenters, stone masons, landscape, plumbers.

These are easy to learn jobs and many people are not picky about the end product, just the cost.

The trouble with this solution is that it's not necessarily effective, and might actually be counterproductive.

We want the best candidates to be lawyers/teachers/professors/doctors, right? Not just anyone who can afford it? Removing the government subsidy on higher education would put us in a place where every kid of a successful drug dealer and his trophy wife went to medical school.

On the other hand, I took a look at a chart of government employment and spending for government employment, and "support staff for institutions of higher education" was the largest number of government employees on a full-time basis.

Makes you wonder.
