Snow tire questions

Right now I have good all seasons on my 2005 mazda6 but they are horrible on snow and ice. I'm looking to get a good pair of snow tires to have on there for the snow months. My car is front wheel drive so my main question is can I just go with the front 2 tires? Is it necessary to have all 4? My rear two tires now have excellent tread still on them, with the fronts being pretty low.

And does anyone have any suggestions for a good tire? I'm looking at a pair of Pirellis and also a pair of Michelin x-ices.

My tire size now is 215/50/17

Where do you have to go?

Dick's and tire rack for all the reviews. Since you have to stop as well as go the rear tires need to be changed as well. May as well go w 4 steel wheels and a set of snows all mounted and balanced from Tire rack.......your little sister will thank you when she takes her car back.
