Citristrip to remove lead based varnish

Rate this topic

I tried to use some of that stuff called Citristrip last night on a couple test spots for both regular latex paint and for some pine paneling I have that I was told has a lead based stain on it. The Citristrip product seemed to encapsulate the stain as it removed it and I was careful not to disturb things too much, but I'm still wearing a respirator and protective equipment as well as thoroughly cleaning the area up afterward.

Are there any issue with what I'm doing that I don't know about? The Citristrip works like a champ and did a wonderful job on the test areas after sitting for only an hour, but I don't want to be lulled into a false sense of security. I have a 5 year old in the house and I do not want to expose him to lead by accident.

Any tips, pointers, or helpful ideas are greatly appreciated.

You are fine.

Lead is only hazardous as inhale-able dust or if eaten. If you put a piece of plastic over the citri-strip it will slow the evaporation and work longer.
