MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- A Portsmouth man who was fishing at Third Beach early this morning died, the police said.

Gary Mathias, 48, was fishing on the rocks at Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge around 4 a.m. when he was swept away by a wave.

Sgt. Mark Minnella entered the water with a life line attached, but the surf was too rough.

A Middletown Fire Department boat pulled Mathias out of the water at the Third Beach boat ramp, where Newport rescue personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Mathias was taken to Newport Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation.

I was just eating at his restaurant with my girlfriend on Friday, too. Never said goodbye. He's on this week's Mercury Magazine here in Newport for restaurant next week. Always a pleasure to be around and loved to fish. Rest in peace, Gary.

Very, very sad news. My condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.

A reminder to always wear a life vest in rough conditions and especially on a jetty. The $50 can save your life.
