chawk
More North Shore Reports: I was off Swampscott/Marblehead most of last weekend and did very well in the mornings and also had some great bird/feeding frenzy action right at dusk each day. Mid day was quiet although I did land my first Blue of the year -a nice one at about 22". I've had a hard time finding any bait fish and even the frenzy action I've seen appeared to be small silver fish -not macks or even pogies. I caught a couple of these using Sabaki rigs in the harbor but they couldn't have been more then 3-4" long but there had to be hundreds in the schools I saw. Cranes' Beach: I used to fish there all the time a few years ago and at one point you could get a night time parking sticker at the Town Hall in Ipswich which allowed you to park just outside the locked gates for most of the night. It was great fishing and quite a spot to be on a nice summer night --just be careful of the tide as it comes in very quick and the sand in some of the spots is tricky. I can't think of any night after about mid-June that I didn't catch something up there using a fish finder rig with clams or herring/mack chunks with the poles stuck in a holders sitting there having a beer -or two... rocket500
You can still get the sticker. I believe its $15.
RussB
That's good to kow, I never understood how people could fish Crane's at night with the parking issues. I'm still going to try to figure out how to get to the other side of Essex Bay, from the Gloucester side. I have heard (spread about the internet and in newspaper articles, so it is no secret) that Essex Bay/River holds some good fishing, from the Crane's side of things, but I am interested in the other side as well. Lots of places to fish up her in Cape Ann, so little time. And access is a problem, it seems. Good to hear the blues are around up here, too. chawk
I used to fish mostly down and to the left of the beach which was directly across from Plum Island. I was tempted once to try and get to the other side so I went over their in the day time to scope it out and it didn't look like it was a good spot to fish -that particular tip of Plum Island (others spots I have fished there and did well). If you're up for a hike, walk as far as you can to the right on the beach and you'll end up almost across from the Wingaersheek Beach area I think and the couple of times I made the hike, I didn't do as well as I usually did so I didn't go back that way often. Be sure and get the sticker though as the police were there often kicking kids out and they always checked to see if I had the sticker on the windshield but never once bothered me after they saw it. timm
Think I'll keep an eye on this thread as I'll likely be moving up to the North Shore next year. I've only really fished Plum Island, Cranes and the Merrimack up there. Never knew about the Cranes night permits -- definitely will be looking into one of those going forward. Northshore Bob
Been out surfcasting 2x/week from shore between Beverly and Gloucester . . . action has picked up since the start of July. Chunking herring/mackeral, consistentently picking up fish, mostly in the 30-35" class. Hope it keeps up! Any other reports?
HanoverStriper
Yes, the north shore is hot. Everyone should head north! On a serious note, my dad has been up in Gloucester all week. Said there are loads of macks around. He has been going out, jigging up a bunch, coming back to the marina, and livelining them while sitting down with a cold beer. Said he has been getting many bass in the 35-38" range. F TOMBO
Peter Gawne
Been picking up some stripers a couple of miles out or Rockport...obviously boat fish. It's not fast and furious out there, but the fish have been coming in at a steady pace. Most have been in the 36-40" range. Any sign of bluefish recently? I didn't see any last year until very late summer, and I love catching blues. Good luck out there! PG
chawk
This week I only managed Tuesday and tonight -Tuesday saw some great action between Ram & Tinker's Island with some mad bird feedings..poppers on the surface were working great. Tonight was a little slower although I didn't get out until late; just one Striper at around 26"-28" but no Blues (caught him trolling around with a Tube'nWorm). The ocean has been scary calm and Tuesday I saw the biggest school of Herring I've ever seen -it looked like something off the Discovery Channel. I easily caught them on Sabiki rigs and ended up letting most of them go as the poppers were working just fine. Couldn't catch any tonight --go fiqure... Northshore Bob
Went out for stripers this afternoon from a shoreline location today between Beverly and Gloucester . . . no bass, but my 8 year old son picked up a 16.5" fluke on a herring chunk. Go figure. He certainly got a kick out of it. Been fishing up here for 30+ years, caught bucketfuls of flounder but this is only the 2nd fluke I've seen this far north.
