I found some red marine grade grease that's made for wheel bearings in boat trailers, I was wondering if this would be ok to pack my 704 with?

I have been using west marine brand trailerbearing grease for about 4 years and have found it works just fine. It gets alittle thick in cold weather.

Everyone seems to have a different opinion on greases but I've used similar greases on my Penn Spinfishers for many years. I typically use the blue marine grease in the large tube thats sort of like a tube of toothpaste.

I don't like to "Pack" the reel full of grease. I coat the parts with it with alittle extra on the grears then add a bead of grease around where the cover goes including around the screw holes. Unless you are dunking the reel it will last the season. If you dunk just breakdown the reel and re-lube after the weekend.

Good luck!

I don't see why it wouldn't work. But my experience with any red grease ive used in the past whether it be hotsauce or pennzoil. Is the red dye will discolor any plastic parts. Which is not the case with the blue yamalube marine grease or omc blue marine grease that i use primarily on all saltwater reels.

And FWIW i find the yamalube is extra tacky wich is what i like for using inside reels.

I always stick with the Manufacturers recommendations. There was a great article in a major sportfishing magazine that tested all greases to see which was best and the Penn grease (not the muscle) but the X-1R was one of the few that came out on top after being subjected to the most brutal conditions.

I use high temp blue grease from ace hardware on just about all my reels

(and drag washers in 'em.) It's fine. a 1 lb can is 5 bucks and will last you forever.

The viscosity of bearing grease is too high for a reel if it were to come in contact with moving parts. I guess you could coat housings with it - just don't get it in the gears.

OK, whats the reason behind this?

High viscosity bearing grease is intended for high heat applications where it is expected to "thin out". This would never happen in a fishing reel, hence it would act more like molasses and gum up the fluid mechanics required for bearings and gears.

If I wanted to "waterproof" a spinning reel that wasn't designed to be waterproof, I'd take it appart and spray the internals of the reels housing with two or more coats of Boeshield T-9. This stuff dries and leaves a waxy film. If you build it up enough where the reels housing cover mates with the housing, it will form a waterproof seal. You could even apply a few coats to the seams with a brush after you have reassembled the reel for added water intrusion protection.

Then I would coat all the moving parts, except the bearings, with synthetic blue marine grease. I would then pack the bearings with a synthetic teflon/silicone based grease like Super Lube. The reason that I would use synthetic based grease instead of dino grease is because it doesn't thicken in cold temps.

I packed my Z series reels with wheel bearing grease for 25 years and never had an issue. Not to discount what Wayne was saying about the better greases and lubes. We are talking about a 704 here. I think you could pack that reel with just about anything and it will perform well.
