bob_G
When grass shrimp were a no go, all the old timers used seaworms. A lot of them prefered seawroms over everything else. The Sultan of Sluggo

I found this to be very true, back in the day when I fished for them under the lights by the old freezer plant..........
JonFrum
"Sea worms (Nereis) are generally considered the best bait, especially for the larger smelt, shrimp the second best, small minnows or clams a poor third. Smelt have also been taken with a small red artificial fly in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and perhaps elsewhere." http://www.gma.org/fogm/osmerus_mordax.htm There are no fish in the Canal. clammer
Ok I,ve never had a problem getting enough grass shrimp for smelt fishing . they are around 12 months ....... no -I can,t get enough for everyone . I,d be lucky / in this time // 2011 to get more than a liter where back iin the day / you could still get @ least a gallon in the winter . I have a friend that for years delivered shrimp to the Boston area bait shops . But take away the marsh & eelgrass & you reduced the shrimp . I also used to be able to dig a flat of clamworms a tide >.in RI .. now I can,t bend down to dig them & can,t afford to buy them / LOL
DonnieB
Worms were always my back up to shrimp but in recent years bare Sabikis have filled my bucket so I don't bother with bait at all anymore.
capie 01
Small pieces of raw shrimp works, however, grass shrimp and worms are my favorite ... " When it comes to fishing, I`d rather be LUCKY than GOOD"
