F'n Seals...

Yep...that's about how it happens when I'm out there doing it.

 

The gutsier seals know they can follow it up and get onto the sand and hang onto it.

 

There's going to be an incident some day....and someone's going to get hurt....badly....and some decisions are going to need to be made.

A couple of years ago at Great Point on Nantucket, a big horsehead (gray) seal grabbed a bluefish I was bringing in right on the rip at the Point.

 

I cranked down the drag and bent the rod into an achingly bowed parabola, hoping to snap the line at the wire leader. The seal stopped in the rip, half in and half out of the water, looked at me, and bit the body off the bluefish.

 

Suddenly there was a bloody bluefish head and a Gibbs bottle plug with at least one exposed treble flying toward my face. I ducked and the fish head sailed past on on up the beach.

 

Time to reinstate the bounty: $5 per seal's nose. And I'm rooting for the great whites to start chowing down on the seal herds as well. Blubbery bastages. . .
