Kayak Fishing near Cape Ann/Plumb Isl., Mass

3 posts in this topic

Will be using a 14' SOT (Malibu Extreme) to fish next week (7/24-7/30) near Plum Island. Relatively new to Kayak fishing and would appreciate any advice - no spot burning - just safe places to put in, local regulations, etc.

Is the sound side any good? I'll be mainly flyfishing but may try some bait as well. I've fished Cape Cod a fair amount. How does Plumb Island compare to the Cape? Thanks in advance.

You can put in in Ipswich at the Pavilion Beach. The current is very strong in the mouth and you really need to be aware of the tides, it can be difficult to get through there at times. There is also a State beach at the end of Plum Island, you need to go through the bird sanctuary to get there, but it is free to park there, and a good walk to the beach, but it puts you on the end of Plum Island, and you can go sound side or ocean.

In Newburyport there are the Joppa Flats, and you can put in at the Water St. ramp, not a lot of parking. A lot of guys fish there in kayaks, mostly pulling eels or T&W at night. Again, you need to be aware of tides, and currents. You might want to check with the guys at First Light Anglers.

Good luck.
