Keeping clams

Rate this topic

5 posts in this topic

Took the kids out today for some clamming, got about 75. Came home air busted when we were out, 93 in house. Out to dinner we are going. Was wondering if the clams would be fine in open cooler with wet towel on top or if I should try to fit them all in fridge. Clams are little bigger than steamer size. Thanks for the help in advance.

Keep em dry and cool. In the fridge in a bowl is your best bet, if you have the room. If not, bag your ice, keep the clams on top, tilt the non draining end of the cooler up and remove the plug to let the melt out. And keep the cooler closed, the ice will keep the internal temp down. Depending on the type of clam, I've kept them for up to a week.

If you can get them in a cooler and ice them down that would be the best. Leave the drain cap off so water doesn't collect in the bottom and kill them. Keep checking the ice and keep it packed. I've gone 1 or 2 days that way and useally have less then a dozen out of 2 coolers that don't open when I cook them.
