Can somebody give me a quick synopsis?

What year did they close commercial fishing for east coast bass, then what year was it re-opened to commercials?

thank you.

It was re-opened in 1995 after just a couple optimistic YOY surveys. It took a million "the sky is crashing" surveys and the 1984 'Atlantic Striped Bass Conservation Act' to get most states to close their commercial fisheries around 1985. Some states closed their recreational fisheries - those that didn't took the necessary reductions through much more stringent size/bag limits. If I remember correctly, at one point in NJ it was 1 fish @ 38". And it changed a lot back them - sometimes mid season it would go up or down an inch or two. Crazy times, but we caught a lot of 38" bass back then - and let almost every one of them go icon14.gif
