gnelson651
...but was it the single worst thing to happen in regards to declining shark populations? 1. I think there was more of a decline in beach attendance than shark populations after this 1975 movie was released. However, after some preliminary research: 2. National Geographic studies in 2005 found a correlation between the decline in shark populations and the "Jaws" movie: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...awssharks.html 3. Looks like most of the decline is caused by overfishing and a profit motive: Found this March 9, 2003: Release from: Australian Broadcasting Corporation An international group of marine experts fears many shark populations are in rapid decline because of overfishing and an alarming increase in the lucrative fin trade. " September 1st, 2006 at 7:53 am SHARK POPULATIONS IN SHARP DECLINE in: Science & Technology News "In the fish markets of Asia, the tailfin from a basking shark can fetch nearly $10,000 (£5,250), a price tag justified not by its nutritional value, but its desirability as a vast sign on which restaurants can advertise their shark fin soup." SoreFoot
...but was it the single worst thing to happen in regards to declining shark populations? Nope. The single worst thing to happen to the shark pop. is the idiots finning sharks for shark fin soup. These animals actually cut the fins off of any kind of shark in the net then throw the poor thing overboard alive too suffer and die a slow death.Hundreds of thousands of them die this way every year! The ones doing it must not have souls. They should go to the extreme deep when their time is up!
DoughboyJones
I certainly doubt it was the worst, but having sharks portrayed as a monstrous villain in a series of movies like that couldn't have helped. Especially since it wasn't limiting that stigma just to 'Jaws' with that scene where Brody is leafing through the shark book and seeing those horrid shark attack photos. Every frame of this movie looks like someone's last known photograph...

AxBeetle
C'mon. The maneater thing is what makes sharks cool. The uncool part is the billion or so people that keep demanding more fins for soup for every special occasion dinner. Classic .........as we continue on....... The village, which had stood for maybe 1,000 years, didn't know we were coming that day. If they had, they would have run. boB was at the eye of our rage. And through him, our Captain Ahab. He would set things right again. That day, we loved him.
