saw an interesting surf rod?

Hello, I was just out getting some old mitchell reels and the gentleman said maybe you can identify a rod for me. I saw it and it was a first for me. It is a surf rod about 9' long, the but of the rod appears to be solid wood and the rest of it is bamboo. It has a decal that says surf king. The way that the guides are set up is what has us puzzled. There is a tip guide and the back from that aprox 2' is another guide. It is here at this guide that has us puzzled. On what would be 180 degrees out (on the bottom side) there is another guide that is the same size. Ant ideas? Thanks, Syd

They set up opposing guides on old bamboo rods to keep them from taking a set from using the same side all the time. Each time you go out, you use the opposite side.
