I see terms get blurred here often.

I would like someone on the right side of the aisle, to explain to me what a liberal is and whether or not being a Democrat automatically makes you a liberal

if the answer is no, please explain.

I think both have some good qualities to them.

I might be the wrong person to ask though, I htink being labeled as a staunch anything is somewhat close minded and a bit contradicting.

Labels are too general and are too much in the eye of the beholder kind of thing.

I believe that a liberal is a person that feels the collective takes precedence over the individual in affairs of government. And no, you do not have to be a Democrat.

You can be a Republican, a Socialist, a Marxist, even a Libertarian (yes there are many very liberal Libertarians)

I am not pressing you to answer, just pointing out to you and others that I AM seeking the "eye of the beholder" definition.

I can get a definition of liberal by googling it.

I am more curious as to how those who often use it as a pajorative (sp?)

define it.

what is a liberal?

Well thats the point, if its eye of the beholder, then everyone wil give you a different answer. No?

Also its tough to take it serious when its just used for flame throwing purposes IMO.

I cant answer you though if you want the flame throwing def of liberalism, but if its for flame throwing, why care?

My definition of a liberal:

Someone who feels that everyone should be taken care of and that it is the responsibility of the government to do so. They think that no one should feel bad and that everyone needs to go out of their way not to make anyone else feel bad and that the government is responsible for enforcing this. Liberals think everything needs to be fair and it is the responsibility of the government to make sure that it is. A liberal believes that there is never a reason to go to war and that attacks on our country are because of perceived injustices inflicted on our attackers by our country.

The words collective and good generally don't go well together.

Beyond equality of opportunity which is just, liberals seek equality of outcome which is unjust.

To me...a Liberal is:

A person that believes that the government knows wht is better for me than I do and is willing to keep passing laws until the government rules every part of our lives.

A person that believes that those able and willing to work and or earn wages should support those that don't/won't.

A person that believes that the more a person makes, the more that they should pay in taxes (larger percentage).

A person that believes that taxes should pay for everything that the government wants to do...to hell with constitutionality.

A person that believes that a disarmed nation will be a safer place because the government will protect them.

A person that believes that there is no limit (or very little) to the amount of taxes that can be levied on the people...i.e. take it all and let the government take care of us...

on and on and on...
