Gulp Shrimp vs. DOA Shrimp

Rate this topic

Has anyone have any first hand experience with using Gulp shrimp vs. DOA shrimp? I have heard from some people that the scent from Gulp beats any other artificial bait but then some say DOA is so life like that it does better even when Gulp fails.

Anyone experienced this? I am asking in the FL forum because shrimp is the bait of choice down here and I am coming down in a couple of months (probably Daytona / Cocoa Beach area).

I have use all three and nothing beats the live stuffclapping.gif but since you ask, i say the DOA 3"

1/4 oz scented shrimp in root beer comes in 2nd

and as far as gulp goes, i have good luck with the swimming mullet

in chartreuse and Jerk shad in Nuclear chicken glow...

The DOA will last you a while and you get three in a pack pre-rig already

so thats not bad, if you want to go in light..

The Gulp can make a mess and those little plastic bags arent leakproof, also

make sure they arent crooked in the bag.

If they are they will hold that shape, and if you have pinfish around they will

tear these guys apart.

The Jerk shad is alittle tougher then the mullet for some reason, and the

flounders seem to love them...

I carry both lures and when i cant find good size live shrimp, i break out the lures

I also fish the areas Daytona/cocoa... If the water is

clear, IMO i would use live shrimp.

Daytona area the water is a little more dirty and has a bit more current.

The cocoa area (Cape/inlet) the water can be crystal clear at times and we

have no current and just a little water movement during the tide change.

Fishing with lures during the day or in clear water can be tough

and thats the reason i will stick to Live shrimp at times,

the trick to them is not to overload them with a huge hook and big sinker,

in fact a freeline live shrimp will catch just about everything in our waters

I have fished with both over the past 2 years and I have gone almost exclusively to the Gulp. I fish from a boat so I like the fact that I can adjust the jig weight to sink at whatever rate I want depending on the current. With the DOA you are pretty much stuck with 2 sizes and I find that they don't sink as quickly. That being said, when wade fishing I found the DOA to be effective because you aren't drifting and can wait until it gets near the bottom.

I have caught, speckled sea trout, redfish, snook, catfish, ladyfish, bluefish, jacks, pompano, pufferfish and probably some other fish that I can't remember on the Gulp. It truly works for everything.

Good luck.

Luke you forgot to add puffers those thing love gulp bait.biggrin.gif

Oh and i believe the DOA comes in four sizes, and the best thing i have learn

is to use a loop knot, when using these smaller soft bait.

I spend alot of time in a pool messing with lures now, and i will insert a small

nail in the tail if i want to add more weight to the smaller lure...

So don't think you can't mod if you want too.... and yes it will change the way it moves, if you go

overboard with the mod...beers.gif

One of our Local Better guides ,writes a weekly short blurb (tight lines) in our small Mullet wrapper ,he has been having better luck using the Glitter DOA , rootbeer grubs, today I caught all shorts on Gulp. (New Penny), no hits on natural DOA, Lots of Catfish on live shrimp. guess you could say use what ever you feel confident with, water temp 90 and heat index over 100 so didnt stay out long on the flats

I went nuts with the Gulp thing... bought 64 bags and 2 containers in the last 2 weeks. I am all Gulp-out. biggrin.gif But I think I will still bring along a couple of DOA just in case.

Thats alot of gulpbiggrin.gif ... Make sure to get "Leak Proof" containers, because

gulp juice is nasty and it seem

to always leak all over the place... you can pick up some containers at

wal-mart and they arent that much..

Oh here another thing to remember... You can also stick other softbait in the

gulp juice...a guy i know has one of those big leak proof container full with

gulp and every other softbait you can think of, and he isnt the only one

that does it..so it must work.

Oh just don't leave anything with a hook in it and then forget about it... that

juice will destroy the hookcwm31.gif ...

Good luck...

To remedy the hard gulp stuck on the jighead.....simply place it in a glass of water over night and it comes right off.

I let mine dangle in my salt water pool and not only does it soften up but it's good to go and fish with again!!!!
