I swear I would rather get on big patches of schoolies right now than the bigger fish up with the alewives! These last couple years have been too weird. Sing out if you see some little 18s.

GOOOOOD NEWS!

I've seen some runts. Not close enough to tell if they were hold overs or fresh travelers but I have with my own eyes seen them.

But you and I are on the same page small fish first then big fish and everything will be ok.

It depends on water temp, bait, competition for said bait..

Fish swim, and hun for food. During migration they go as far as they have to

To find/chase good eats

to escape areas already "full of predatory fish"

in the target flow/water clarity/temp

What remains is a behemoth of an puzzle to which no one being has the derivation.

Likely there are already a few scouts about

Mackeral are around no in the usual haunts (southern, maine) though spotty

Good luck with the chase.

For what it maybe worth

Last year OTW mag, had an article of tagged fish migrating from the eastern Ct & narragansett bay. Fish tagged around May 1st were eventual caught on the north shore about a month later and in scarborough maine, 1.5 months later (end of June). Assuming the fish went thru the canal going north should give you an idea of how far and rate they will travel.....
