Is the Pflueger President spinning reel ok for saltwater?

The price is excellent, its super smooth with 8 bearings. I always thought of it as a freshwater reel, but see it advertised in all the major saltwater magezines. Will hold up to salt water use? It would make an excellent inshore light reel.

They are smooth reels, but I don't think they were designed to be used in salt water. Maybe light duty, but constant cleaning would be required. I think you'd be better off with a reel that was designed for salt water. Once salt gets into them it will eat them up. The salt water designed reels have corrosion resistant parts that will last you longer and require less maintenace.

Sure use it, buy a new one for next year.

The Medalist is (was?) their saltwater version of that reel. Very little in the way of corrosion resistant parts in that reel. But, if you're the type that is meticulous about cleaning your reels doesn't mind stripping them down every couple of trips, they should work for you.

If its just gonna be a throw away reel, I could get the Daiwa BG 13 for about 10$ more and it would last forever.

Thanks for all the replies, Id be using it in the kayak so its definitely going to get splashed and dunked. It looks like Id be safer with the Daiwa.

Don't get it, it doesn't handle being dunked in freshwater well, I can't imagine how it'd handle saltwater. I'd recommend it to a freshwater fisherman who wanted a really smooth reel at a reasonable price, and didn't plan to get the reel wet at all.

I'm using one or two FW spinning reels in the salt, never dunk them but they get splashed, of course they get a good bath after all, btw, most of the good FW reels have SS bearings so you don't have to be so cwm31.gif....wink.gif
