Painting options

Just finished a very informative, several day review of the first 50 or so pages of this forum. My goal was to learn more about making and finishing "non-lath" plugs.

I live a few miles north of Boston in a 100+ year old house where the basement is my work shop. It also contains a gas fired boiler and hot water heater, both older, with with active (non electric) pilots. At best, any plug finishing would take place between 5 and 15 feet from these appliances.

Many of the threads I read emphasized the use of rattle cans vs. an air brush but, practically, isn't an air brush the only real option for painting (short of brushing) if I want to have some plugs finished by late April, mid May, given the smells and hazards of using rattle cans in the basement and cold NE winters and springs?
