I've only surfcasted a handful of times and would like to do a lot more this year. I was given an older surfcasting rod with a penn reel(10')Both are in great condition. My question is what should I get for a lightweight setup? I really don't want to spend a lto of money, but I want something decent. Also I read that you can still catch small stripers up in Providence, RI during the winter. I'm assuming I need to use a lightweight setup for this, is this correct? Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you are throwing small lures to small stripers and dont need much distance a 7-8' rod should serve you well. I dont know how much dough you have but Tica rods seem decent for the price...maybe 70 bucks. Throw on a Shimano Sedona 4000 maybe a daiwa for another 50 and you have a reasonable decent outfit for schoolies. Of course there are 100s of rods and reels to choose from so you will get many recomandations. If you are only chucking bait just use your 10'.

If you like the Penn reel that you have they make the same line of reel in a smaller size why not start there? For the money the Tica rods are nice a 8' might be a nice place to start on the small end. Just my .02 smile.gif

Post a wanted post over in the buy/sell forum. I'm sure you could find some good deals on a light set-up in there. Maybe a used lami or st. Croix, or something like that someones looking to get rid of. Theres a conventional, G Loomis schoolie rod in there right now. Probably not what you should start off with but gives ya an idea of wants around.
