braid vs. mono

I did a couple searches on here and from what I picked up most people use mono for fishing bait, and braid with a mono leader for plugging. Are there any other pros and cons of braid and mono that I'm missing? and approximately how long is the mono leader on braid?

When using braid with light lures and baits, I'll use a short leader of about 18-24 inches. If I'm using braid to cast out big heavy rigs, I'll use a heavy mono leader about 1.5-2X the length of the rod to keep me from cutting my finger on the cast (spinning reels). One problem I have had with braid is hooking large fish really close to shore. Sometimes (since it has no stretch) the line will snap.

as far as pros and cons its the same old song. braid can cut you up without a leader , its tough to break off if snagged. it doesn't give at all. Mono is less sesitive and gives a softer hook set so on so on. as far as leader I was taught you want the leader knot (main line to leader) to be anywhere but where a big fishes tail will be flapping, remembering of course how strong a cow's tail swipes are, you dont need the week link there. So I go 45 inches or so , which requires finding your swivel before it runs your tip top. Now when i start catching more 45 inch fish I will re eval.wink.gif

Yeah braid shows you really quickly why you do not want to get a backlash in your line.... "bring a sharp knife"... right?

I fish with braid line and floro leader. The length of leader depends on situation.

Plugging= 3' leader

Bait =length of rod, but if I'm fishing rocky area my leader is usually couple time longer than rod.

If my leader rubs against the rocks I just replace the leader.

Cheaper braid> 4 weaves has a learning curve...8 weave braid cost

more, but in the end it paids for itself by cutting down on tangles....

Braid is stronger and smaller dia than mono...but it nicks up pretty good when fishing rocks...

All braid has a learning curve, and you have to learn new things....

it needs to be pack tight on the reel....

you have to look/feel..... the amount of line you use for that day...

mono leaders are a good thing to use with braid...

don't do a overkill on the line rating....in other words dont load 80lb braid

on a 4000 shimano spherokooky.gif

and a host of other things....

Mono> Been used for years and will still be around when the next super line

comes outbiggrin.gif

Its cheaper and it a load and go type of deal with mono....

oh what do i use.....Braidbiggrin.gif

Learn how to use braid and you will love it....but like anything else, there

are times to
