baldwin
I, like wader-dad, use an old ski pole, tied to my belt with a piece of springy telephone cord. I'd hate to put an unneeded scratch in my rod, can break later at that spot (works like a glass-cutter). I've done this for years, works for me. Just make sure to cut off that rubber ring at the bottom, as it can easily get lodged tight between rocks. A wading staff should be mandatory for uneven rocky waters. Luds48
Use your rod. The bottom section is covered in cork tape so the chances of damaging the blank are unlikely. Why carry another piece of gear unecessarily?

TBD
First thing I learned from Bill Wetzel on my pilgrimage to M was to pull the handle off my VS and fill it with greese, put it back on and use the rod as a cane. He said the handle was one of the spots he noticed you could get water through. That guys been fishing M so hard and long, I still do what I learned.
