Reynardfishing
I have a Mercury 250 HP optimax that is about 10 years old. It has been cared for and serviced regularly and does not have high hours. I just replaced the fuel filters. The engine runs fine at low speed up to about 1800 or 2000 RPM. When I try to speed up it will not go to any higher RPM and the motor sounds very "luggy" at that point. Any ideas are greatly needed and will be appreciated. ted527
might want to take a good look at rubber fuel lines from tank to engine. if original they could be damaged on the inside from the friggin ethanol....... mine were.........

CaptSkip
Also check the gas line pump ball. I had the flow check inside the ball come loose one time and had the same issues you described

dena
make sure the fuel line around the filters is not kinked. is one of the filters installed backwards, some fuel filters are directional. def sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Reynardfishing
I agree, it is a fuel delivery problem. Filters are new and correct in installation. I think the system is getting a signal from somewhere that puts a restriction on the ignition. Tonight on the pier I was told a low output water pump could do that. eaglesfanguy
Yikes.. its an optimax. Your not getting any alarms? Mine screams at me all the time .I have constant over heating problems 2002 135 hp optimax. 200 hrs. The slowing is the guardian system built into them. Keeps you from doing more damage. Really nice. But the coolant issue i have is never ending. Third mechanic working on it tomorrow.

Chief2
"about 10 yrs old", do you know the year? Have you had any of the updates done? 99-01 opti's are known as opti-kabooms, because of some issues they had. If they have not had the updates, I would do them. Opti's should last many thousands of hours, and 10 yrs should not be in the condition to only get a "last year" out of it.
Reynardfishing
Yes this has been serviced each year by mercury. The local guy is well regarded and he shares your optimism about the future of the engine. It seems strong - just the darn unending fuel issue Your note helps a sometimes one gets a bit fed up wiht the problems Thanks
