penn 712 spool binding

Rate this topic

I have 3 penn 712 greenies . The reels are smooth with no rubbing, but when i have a fish or any kind of weight on the line the reel starts to bind. If i reel fast it is not that noticable, but when i reel slow you can feel it binding. There are rub marks inside the rotor . I changed the shafts but it still binds. Any help would be great. I think its time to to put them to rest and buy something newer. Thanks MARTY

Check for play in either the rear bushing in the gear case (rear bearing or bushing that holds the pinion gear), the pinion gear (19-712) it's self, or the main ball bearing (20-704), or side play in the spool.

My feeling is that when a fish is on there is just enough play to cause the spool to bind.

Another thing to check is the roundness on the rotor cup itself.

Do not forget to check if the teflon washer that fits under the spool is there or worn.
