South Shore Clamming?

Rate this topic

Hey guys.. I am heading out to Fire Island on Sunday and would like to know of any spots I can jump the side of the boat and grab some clams for the grill. I used to do it nearly every weekend when I was younger, but lost track of the areas. Is this legal? I would be heading out from around the Cory Beach area in Patchogue.

Thanks!

Leatherface,

It may be a little far for you, but I've been doing exactly that on the flats in about waist deep water off of East Island. Pretty nice. Now that I think about it, I think it's called Money Island. Google Earth it... you'll find it. Got about 60 in 45 minutes yesterday.

Good luck.

I don't get it,you used to do everything yrs agoheadscratch.gif, very little has changed.I'm 34 & I still catch everything in the same areas as when I was a kid.

If clamming by foot or donkey rake for personal use,>>>clam away,no license needed.

About 10 years ago, I stopped doing lots of things. I used to fish almost every weekend, go to Fire Island all the time and grab clams on the way. Got real busy, started working 3 jobs and didn't do much for almost 10 years. I finally quit my weekend job and have been enjoying my weekends again. So I am curious if everything is the same (especially rules and regulations, laws). I don't want to get into trouble. I am only a few years older than you, so when I say years ago.. I don't mean 50 years ago.. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the info.

I have been treading clams my whole life. With a donkey rake, a scratch rake or feet... never had a permit and was never asked. You'll be fine.

Good luck

Personally, I know nothing about clamming. It's in your best interest to ALWAYS look in Mass marine regulations/abstracts when it comes to shell fish and lobster. I witnessed DEP glassing people shellfishing in beds. They look out for this sort of stuff, and there's no slap on the wrist due to ignorance of the law. $1000 dollar fine with lobsters, and the possibility of losing a vehicle.

How cool would it be if the kids witnessed daddy getting popped for shellfishing illegally, worse yet, having to listen about it forever from your ol'lady.

Years ago, DEP would overlook alcohol, but not lobsters, and from what I've heard last couple of years, they're stepping up enforcement of shell fishing regs.

Do your research, do it right, and years from now when kids are grown up they say,"Dad, remember how much fun it was..........."

If you plan on going on a boat and raking 600 - 1200 clams then I would consider getting a permit. Otherwise, like I said, don't worry about it. I've had Marine Police ask me on the beach how the clamming is after getting a few dozen and guess what? They didn't care. It's one of those instances where, if you need a permit (and I've never even heard of a non-commercial shellfish harvesting permit) it is not enforced.
