I just saw the pics of your nice new truck. I wouldn't even think of drilling holes into the cab. It will absolutely kill any resale value at a minimum. If your were driving some beater... '89 F150 or something, I'd say drill away.

 

Find another way... could put a rod holder in a trailer hitch... could buy a truck bed tool box and drill holes in that... there just has to be a better way.

Mounting it straight up would put your rods very high in the air. If that's what you want to use I'd think about u-bolting it to a cargo bar. This way you could tilt it. Not sure if you'd maintain the angle but you could figure something out for that. I've never used a cargo bar so I don't know how strong they are, just an idea. I'm guessing that if it's positioned about a foot off the cab end of the bed and angled so the bottoms of the holders are resting against the bed wall then the rods weight will hold the angle.
