Sad ending for a giant in small boat design

I read yesterday of the death by suicide of Phil Bolger, preeminent small boat designer. Apparently, he had detected significant changes in his metal acuity, such that he believed that his quality of life was diminishing rapidly, and he decided to end his life before that happened. His obituary is in the Boston Globe.

For those who may not know, Bolger designed many small boats, some of rather unusual design. Perhaps his design most commonly built by amateur builders was the Gloucester Light Dory.

The members of the small boat community will sorely miss him.

R.I.P

Best regards,

Irv

Knew the guy from when I went to boatbuilding School in Maine. It's a real shame. May he RIP, and he will be missed.

That being said, I have watched my older relatives go through dimensia and alzheimer's. It is no sort of life to live. Were I to be in the same situation as him, I would do the same thing.
