NYC hospitals overwhelmed with possible swine flu victims

Fox is reporting that hundreds of people waited all day to be seen in New York ER's, but many gave up and went home.

Despite spending 17% of our GDP on health care, our hospitals can't handle a little panic. Wasn't somebody here laughing a couple of weeks ago about Mexico's inability to treat all the victims?

No cause of death. Many ERs are now standing room only because of the fear of swine flu. If you listen to a better news source, you'll hear really good interviews with physicians about the overwhelming presence of the masses of people with common colds, viruses, and infections who are afraid (rightfully) they have H1N1.

Of course that's not as sexy of a story as yours.

Hey, it's like this....the freaking ER is called the EMREGENCY ROOM....it's for EMERGENCIES!!!! Go to a regular freaking doctor and the EMERGENCY ROOM won't be so packed. Scott

PS, they went to the ER because A) they have no money, B)They have no doctor, C) They are afraid.

That is going to overwhelm a ED. No Doubts. Scott

No need to politicize this. ER's have been jammed for many years. Last year I had to go to the ER over a holiday weekend and waited for over 8 hours to be seen. It's not a pretty picture, swine flu or not.

It was politicized several weeks ago when a member scoffed at Mexico's socialized medicine and its inability to deal with throngs of panicked people clogging the ERs, resulting in fatalities for those who really needed it.

The question is, if you have the H1N1 virus, should you go to the emergency room? If the answer is yes, then how do people with regular flue or other maladies tell what they have without a trip to a doctor or emergency room?

Years ago, there have been times I have waited many, many hours in the ER waiting room. Especially on the weekend. New York City hospitals are at times insanely busy, without something like the H1N1 bug flying around smile.gif

I wonder how the poor hypochondriacs are faring?
