First keeper- heifer not a cow

Having started surfcasting last Fall and only managing about a half dozen schoolies from the surf on the South Shore, I finally caught my first keeper yesterday (just barely at 28 and a half inches). I was a somewhat surprised at finding roe sacs, though, since I assumed that females in GSB would have spawned already. I suppose, and perhaps those with knowledge can let me know, that this female was likely migrating to spawn in New England later this Spring. It didn't feel right taking a gravid female. If there isn't a way to distinguish betrween the sexes, I guess I'll catch and release for a few more weeks. I have to admit, though, that I love to eat fish roe and Striped Bass roe (with scrambled eggs this morning) is quite good! Had I known, though, I would have passed on that fish.
