Is the Religious Right done with Politics?

In her Washington Post column today, Kathleen Parker reports on how this kind of thinking as grown considerably more common, to the point that many "principled Christians" are now "finished with politics." Parker highlights a recent argument between Tom Minnery, head of the political arm of Focus on the Family, and Steve Deace of WHO Radio in Iowa.

Deace's point was that established Christian activist groups too often settle for lesser evils in exchange for electing Republicans.... Compromise may be the grease of politics, but it has no place in Christian orthodoxy, according to Deace.

Put another way, Christians may have no place in the political fray of dealmaking. That doesn't mean one disengages from political life, but it might mean that the church shouldn't be a branch of the Republican Party. It might mean trading fame and fortune (green rooms and fundraisers) for humility and charity.

Deace's radio show may be beneath the radar of most Americans and even most Christians, but he is not alone in his thinking. I was alerted to the Deace-Minnery interview by E. Ray Moore -- founder of the South Carolina-based Exodus Mandate, an initiative to encourage Christian education and home schooling. Moore, who considers himself a member of the Christian right, thinks the movement is imploding.

"It's hard to admit defeat, but this one was self-inflicted," he wrote in an e-mail. "Yes, Dr. Dobson and the pro-family or Christian right political movement is a failure; it would have made me sad to say this in the past, but they have done it to themselves."

For Christians such as Moore -- and others better known, such as columnist Cal Thomas, a former vice president for the Moral Majority --
the heart of Christianity is in the home, not the halls of Congress or even the courts. And the route to a more moral America is through good works -- service, prayer and education -- not political lobbying.

I especially liked the bolded part. Something I feel has been de-emphasized by the people most in the position to make a difference for a while.

If your a lefty, do you believe in GOD? Most of you I know are not christian. You may say Yes I am, but I say nay, you are not christian because true christians would have saw the evil that is Barry Obama.

Obama like many other Dem's and Liberals are atheist. You guys proved it to me when he said "We are no longer a Christian Land" and you people screamed for joy and praised him. Well Barry if I ever get a chance to meet you, I will turn my back on you, because in my eyes you are very evil.

This land was Founded by Christians, and Christians still are the Majority. If you are a christian and you voted for Obama just because you wanted change next time vote with your Head and Heart not with your emotions, because who would be the less of 2 evils, the evil you knew or the unknown evil that we have now that you still blindly follow.

I ask all christians to open your eyes and Let the Lord back in to your hearts, and reject Obama, because he seriously has no Morals or Values, and should be, but a fading memory...

We need to get back intouch with our families, the Lord (or GOD if your a Jew) our Morals and Values and start to get rid of all these evils in the next election.

I want people like YOU, OUT OF MY REPUBLICAN PARTY! You make the rest of the party look like loons with the "every Democrat or liberal doesn't believe in God" line of BS. The quicker you nut jobs go back to handling snakes, the quicker the Republican party can be healed and move forward.

Well said MikeMunn. Rusty you sound like a paranoid wacko with all your Christain rhetoric. Are you par of the 21st century or are you still in the 19th? We were founded on Christian principles and most of us try to live by them, but we are also a nation of many different beliefs, some good some bad. I personally am more afraid of people like you than i am of most other people, because you are removed from reality. If people would stop being so paranoid, use some common sense, and listen to actual facts instead of the rantings of some FAR right wing wachos we would all be better off.

I doubt I'll be backing up anytime soon. I'm well aware it's Palm Sunday and next Sunday is Easter. Your posts have NOTHING to do with working together, EVER. You just want everyone to do what you want. You make accusations about what people whom you'll never meet are thinking. That's just plain nuts. I would never tell you what you can or can't say anywhere you want, I believe in the 1st amendment. Just know that you'll be called on things you spout that are completly contray to what you profess. Forgiveness? You don't seem to have much.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Rusty, everyhing you've written on this thread has religous content, including your quote at the bottom of every post. If you knew anything about me you'd know I'm a typical Irish Catholic. Learned enough about living a good life and being a good person when i was a kid, so i don't have to be reminded every Sunday. I pray to God everyday when I go to work n the woods, that I don't get killed and get home safe. So far it's worked, so why question it. But I also believe that we are not necessarily better than anybody else, and I keep an open mind until proven otherwise.

Rusty, they fear you like they will fear the Lord.....when that time comes..and to mention His name rankles their mane..for they are living the lie that they believe is truth, and when they face The Truth...they will face their own hatred of Him......

Your faith is something to them, as repulsive as Obama's socialistic agenda is to you...it goes against the grain...and no matter how they explain it away, there is always a gulf between those who have faith, and those who don't! And the principles of socialism, no matter how agreeable they may be in sharing the benefits of a "mutual welfare", can not be considered benefit at all when they are gained at the expence of liberty and freedom......

(More than likely this was taken out of context, if he had really understood that the Christian right is really Christian, as is Dr. Dobson, he would have realized that the Christian is never "defeated", it is only a never ending struggle against the powers of darkness and untruth.....and until the day of the Lord, will continue to be an unending battle, with losses as well as wins.

The "religious right" vote, too. Because of that they'll never be out of politics and, frankly, they shouldn't get out of politics because they deserve representation, too. The republican party, contrary to negative propaganda levied against it is not controlled by or dominated by or consists of a majority of religious extremists.

So the "religious right" doesn't approve of homosexuality - or drunkeness - or prostitution. Community standards need to be set by the communities themselves and as part of a community, everyone should have a say in what the standards of conduct should be.

As far as I'm concerned, this is really a non-issue that only has value as a propaganda tool for the left.

RW you are right that the FAR right (read religious right) will always have a say on a local level and will continue to be a thorn in the side of more reasonable open minded people. The reason they will never be a factor on a national level is because their views are too rigid and more moderate people will never vote for far right candidates. Since the religious right is usually associated with the Republican party, the GOP will not regain power until they dissassociate with the hateful bigots of the religious right and appeal to more moderate voters. So get used to it.
