FWW? WalkinJack? Lichum? FishinAmbition?

Nope.

First I heard of it.

Rememeber the Remington Fireball?

IIRC, that gun required some sort of special ATF ruling/designation because it was basically a sawed off rifle.

I'm gonna go look it up.

At first blush I wonder about the expansion ratio of this new .17.

Very basically, the expansion ratio factors involve the volume of the bore and the volume of propellent gas produced by the burning powder.

The case volume of the new .17 looks like it will generate an awful lot of gas that has to be jammed through that tiny .17 bore.

I wonder what this .17 throat life expectantcy is.

OTOH, I marvel at the astonishing efficiency of the .204 Ruger.

Truly a phenom cartridge.

One that maximizes the desired variables.

We've learned much about propellants,

How to make them burn cooler, less erosive of throats and at lower pressures.

We live in the age of the ballistician.

Those powder chemists and gun engineers continue to come up with combos that blow my mind.

Computer power makes these marvels real.

I have asked the question: "Do we need another rifle cartridge?"

Probably not.

But the point is that all the new trick stuff improves the "old" stuff too.

So I'm all for the march of technological improvements in the firearms arena.

Though I don't need it, before I die, I hope and expect to see 1 mile/second V in a practical, mass-produced cartridge/rifle combo.

Make it for everyone who wants it, not just wildcatters.

I started thinking about that milestone in decades past.

my dad had a 220 swift. claimed 4100fps i think.

shot groundhogs at 500 yds.

if you stood at the right angle behind the shooter, you could 'see' the shot going out.

20X scope if i remember right, i think it was a model 70 winchester.

4100 FPS is right in the .220 Swift ballpark.

I have a 22" Bullberry Barrel for one of my Contenders in 17 Mach IV. Throat Erosion after 750 or so Rounds is negligible.

XP 100. The Action can/could be had as either a Rifle, or hand Gun. I have two complete as Hand Guns, one in 221 Fireball, and one in 7mmBR, and one Action that will become a 6.5 Grendel. (My IMHSA toys)

That one was eatin size!

I got a good deal on an XP-100 with the specific intent to build a 17 MK-IV in, I think '85? Very clean gun, but very ugly!(I had visions of a ss Shilen #5, Jewell trigger, fancy maple stock etc.)

Of course I had to shoot it (already had an extended eye relief scope)

NOTHING!

OK, now I've got a puzzle (God help me!) Long story somewhat shortened, It likes 45 gn Hornady "Bee" bullets at around 2750 fps Very Much! (another rifle project gone astray)

I now have a very ugly, very accurate, Buck Rogers looking, 200 yd groudhog eliminator.

I'm now thinking Mini MK X, since they're available again (any feedback?)

I have 3 17's, 2 in 17-222, 1 in 17-223 (prior to 17 REM)

My favorite is a #1 17-222 factory contour with the rib reinstalled, Leopold VX-3 2.5-8. A great carry rifle, 1/2" all day long with The Hornady 25gn V-Max and H4895. Groundhog go Bye-Bye.
